Take a voyage into the unknown with Space Shanty: a playful intergalactic experience and voyage through time-based on Bristol's involvement with space science and travel.
Taking the humble child's space rocket as an inspiration for the installation, you will enter a theatrical space handmade from cardboard and materials donated by Bristol’s Children’s Scrapstore within which videos, lighting effects and digital installations will guide you through walk through story.
Mixing fact and fantasy this walk through story starts in the floating harbour and explores how the stars were relied on by sailors as they crossed the ocean. Replica artefacts and stories representing Bristol’s work in the world of space exploration will be uncovered through exploratory play.
Your galactic guide will be Bemmie the Rat, a cheeky local chappie with aspirations of being a Ratronaut! He’ll help you navigate time-travelling portals and introduce you to far-flung corners of the galaxy, to spaces filled with heart songs and stories of communities living on alien planets.

Some very clever ideas. I liked that nearly everything was recycled. I would have liked to have had a chance to read everything to get the full story, but was led by my 7 yr old grandson, who did everything he wanted to do. He loved the origami, escape tunnel, spacecraft simulator, and Bemmie's room. The guides were very helpful and he enjoyed talking with them. It was good that we were not hustled out at the end and had some extra time to ask questions and properly examine Bemmie's room.
Funny experience for kids
My 8 year old grandson enjoyed it. Only problem, we couldn’t get the QR code to work, there was a bright light shining onto the code.
We love it and loved how it was all put together and my daughter loved Bemi the Rat. Just felt it was very short duration. Felt it could have been a bit longer but other than that it was a great day
Really clever and resourceful, captured my kids imagination as the ventured through the scenes.
Nice, creative, hand made,
Really fun, interactive experience
The kids LOVED it. So much to do . I couldn't get them out. Great value for the money.
Absolutely fantastic! I’m almost speechless as it was just so spectacular my 5 year old daughter loved it! Highly recommend.
4yr and 8yr old girls both enjoyed the experience. We spent a nice hour going around the area. Loved the Bristol accent and Bemmie the Rat! Wait for the flying the rocket was a bit long for the children but they enjoyed it once they had their turn. Nice to see the use of recycled items to create the areas.
Good experience for us all.
Great time had by all, we loved doing the activities together and the green screen was a great addition. Very original and well done.
Only to say it’s brilliant it’s was worth going and my grandson loves it
I took the grandchildren (6 & 10 yrs) to this during the holidays. They loved the activities, the lights and the whole experience. They wanted to go round again when we finished which is a first!
Me and my 2.5y old loved this!
Really fun and interactive. With children 5,8 and 11 and they all found things to engage with. Only tiny downsize was they were hoping to meet the rat 😄
Enjoyable experience
Top marks to the scrap store! Wonderful creations. The children had fun, they enjoyed Bemmie the rat as well - wish it had been longer
In the words of my son who went with his granddad- ‘super! I got to drive a space ship!’
The staff were very friendly including the lady who showed how to build the boats and rockets
Great
Very imaginative and immersive, my 3yo adored flying the space ship the most!!
Great constructions, very cleverly created, plenty to keep the children busy and interested. Just right for our 2&5 year olds. Thank you.
My grandson and I had a great time 😊. Thanks
really funny, exciting and creative day out
Great little activity to do with children. We particularly enjoyed the making of the origami rocket and pressing all the buttons in the control center. All the staff were lovely and helpful too
The whole experience only took us 20 minutes to go through, maybe because my son may have been too old at 9. I think it's better for smaller children. It was very creative though with a good use of sustainable materials and quite imaginative.
Good fun for my 5 year old grandson on the whole. The shanties passed him by but a control panel with lights, buttons and sounds hits the spot. As did flying the spaceship and the green screen. Did find it a bit confusing to follow though.
The staff were amazing and very helpful with my disabled daughter.
This was so cute and my little one loved it! It was quite short though for the price. We went back and explored some more.
One or two bits could’ve been better , ie the handwritten clues, but it was very cleverly put together using recycled materials & my autistic boy had lots of fun with the interactive clues on my phone. He also thought the space screen very funny, wish it was longer!
Took girl grandchildren 3 and 6. They both enjoyed it and had fun.
Really interactive and great fun.
I thought the experience was super fun and imaginative and something a bit different for kids.
I brought my 3 children but I think my eldest (age 14) was too old for it. My 2 younger children enjoyed the experience more.
It was creative and imaginative. It wasn’t too busy so we got to really appreciate it.
