Panel Discussion: What Does Home Mean to You?

Sustainable Safe Stable: what does it mean to be at home?

What does your home mean to you? Join us as we join the dots between housing, economy, migration, environment and community.

At this panel event, we will gather underneath Luke Jerram’s inspiring artwork, Gaia, to discuss with our expert panel what is means to be at home. One of the Greek words for home is ‘oikos’ from which we get the words economy and ecology.

As we discuss the topic of home, we will explore what it means to build a sustainable economy that is fair and just and how to respond to the climate, ecological and environmental emergency.

We will also explore what it means for people to be displaced from their homes and seek home elsewhere, how to build sustainable homes for all, what it means to be at home in our bodies and how we can respond collectively to these issues.

The Panel:

  • Alice Braybrook, Charity and Community Partnerships Lead, Homewards
  • Amy Dartington, Environmental and Sustainability Manager, Diocese of Bristol
  • Andrew Stansbury, Project Development Lead, Housing Festival
  • Prof Danielle Schmidt, School of Earth Science, University of Bristol
  • Dr Krish Kandiah OBE, The Sanctuary/Greater Good Global
  • Luke Jerram, Artist and creator of Gaia
  • Phillip Bate, Director of Business Banking, Triodos Bank
  • Dr Rita Issa, GP & Climate Activist

The theme of the panel event:

HOME – being at home in ourselves, in our planet and with each other.

  • Building a sustainable economy
  • Responding collectively to the climate and ecological emergency
  • Responding to the housing crisis
  • Detoxifying the migration debate
  • Health impacts of all of the above

We want listeners to leave the event more informed & inspired, have an greater appreciation of complexity of the problems & how/if they interact & also hopeful for solutions, and gaining sense of collective responsibility rather than individual guilt.

The discussion will be facilitated by Jonnie Parkin, Canon Missioner at Bristol Cathedral.
