It is advisable that students wear comfortable and or loose clothing.
This style of painting is not typically messy, but if students want to be safe, dark clothing, aprons, or old clothes should be worn as a precaution to avoid any ink spills.
I am a British-Indian artist based in Bristol, with a passion for exploring a wide range of artistic mediums. Recently, my focus has been on the traditional Japanese brush painting style known as 'Sumi-e'. For me, the movement of the brush and the bleed of the ink into the paper is a meditation. There is an aliveness to the paintings and a rhythmic quality. As though the painters were dancing in the process.
Inspired by this connection between art and movement, I launched my latest project, Moving Ink, where I explore the dynamic relationship between live ink paintings and the fluidity of dancers. This project has also informed my own process, where I integrate movement from my body into my painting practice.
I now offer a series of workshops sharing this art form, including ‘Live-Motion Drawing Workshops’ where participants learn the fundamentals of gesture drawing and capturing motion with dynamic poses. I also host playful, movement-based painting sessions called ‘Play and Paint.’ My aim is to help others experience the joy of creative expression through motion, while teaching techniques that bring art to life.
I am a British-Indian artist based in Bristol. I have explored a range of mediums, but recently have been focusing on Japanese brush paintings known as “Sumi-e”. The movement of the brush and the bleed of the ink into the paper is a meditation. There is an aliveness to the paintings and a rhythmic quality. As though the painters were dancing in the process.
This inspiration led to my most recent project, ‘Moving Ink’, where I used materials from this region to explore movement through live ink paintings of dancers and to explore the process of painting with movement in my own body.
During this exploration I have started to run workshops teaching the fundamentals of gesture drawing and capturing motion “Live-Motion Drawing Workshops” at HOURs Gallery and hosting movement and painting sessions “Play and Paint” at The Island Nelson Street, where I also have my studio.
