Rock legends Jethro Tull are bringing The Christmas Jethro Tull concert to Bristol Cathedral this Christmas. Expect Christmas-theme Jethro Tull tracks, alongside several pieces of re-worked Classical repertoire and traditional pieces from the musical liturgy of the Church of England.
Ian Anderson, known throughout the world of rock music as the flute and voice behind the legendary Jethro Tull, is widely recognised as the man who introduced the flute to rock music.
Anderson will be joined by special guests and the Cathedral's Director of Music, Mark Lee.
Ian says of the show, “Whether your Christmas is a secular affair of gift-giving and family gatherings or a more worshipful recognition of one of the two biggest days in the Christian calendar, join us for some uplifting Christmas spirit, music, readings and maybe even a prayer or two."
The self-professed non-believer nonetheless claims a huge affinity for the deeds and traditions of Christianity. In his support for the both the religion and the actual places of worship, he performs most years in our great cathedrals and churches - and a few little ones too!
“The bringing together of people of all backgrounds, cultures and faiths in this way is possible, perhaps, only under the auspices of modern Christianity, especially the Anglican Church. So, if I can help to draw people in to these beautiful and historic buildings to savour just a little of the spirit of Christmas, it seems like a worthwhile effort.
“The profits from the sales of tickets go to the upkeep of these sacred buildings and, perhaps, also in support of the musical liturgy of the church. I try to balance the festive time of year in song with a few of the elements of an old-fashioned carol service. All delivered with good humour and good cheer. Grace me and, hopefully, a few special guests with your presence for some of the best-known repertoire of Jethro Tull and a few snippets of seasonal traditional church and Classical music.”
Join Ian and his band for a moment of pre-christmas madness, goodness and togetherness.
A bar will be available before the concert and during the interval. The Cathedral operates a Challenge 25 policy so please bring ID.

A lovely festive concert . Lucky to be near the front so a good view.
Wear warm clothes mind as Cathedral is cold!
Ian Anderson is my life time favourite artist, I love the man for the music pleasures he has brought to my life, so see him perform in any concert format is an absolute joy. Thank you .
Excellent
An excellent evening of good music and readings in a beautiful cathedral.
Amazing concert
Loved the mix of music
Great evening. Ian didn’t let us down. The acoustics weren’t very good in the cathedral which let it down.
Great.
I wouldn't have liked to be sat near the back. Ian and the gang were brilliant, as usual, but perhaps staggered chairs might be better for viewing in future. The basic execution, ie ticket sales, entry, toilets, stewards, was bob on.
Very enjoyable
Thank you for a wonderful truly musical evening
A lovely mixture of traditional (from the choir), bizarre (special guest Lloyd Grossman singing and playing guitar) and classic prog from the JT boys, this was an excellent experience. The sound was surprisingly good given the cavernous surroundings, although the spoken word passages were muddy from where we were right at the back. It was a unique mix of festive and rock and was an event I'm delighted I experienced....and hope to do so again.
A very memorable evening, magic location, wonderful music and a really special Christmas feeling.
Ian Anderson etc were ALL brilliant. Amazing accoutics. The one thing (person) that spoilt it for us was the Rev’d (Richard?) constantly wandering up and down the aisles swinging his stick, pretending to play and dancing. Basically trying to be part of the act/evening . He was extremely annoying, irritating and distracting!!
Great programme - the Cathedral choir, especially, were excellent
Excellent night
Wonderful evening. The Cathedral was beautiful as a stage for this event. Imaginative lighting, sound good. The Christmas theme was evident throughout, with lovely input from the Cathedral choir, organist and clergy.
Excellent musicians and the guest artists were tremendous.
Set was exceptional with well chosen pieces.
Well done Jethro Tull and Bristol Cathedral.
The venue was superb and Ian anderson and the boys did themselves proud, as they do every time I have seen them, I will come back to Bristol to have a good look at the amazing Cathedral. Maybe have the Merch and Bar in separate areas so you don't have one humungus queue at the interval, just a thought. Overall well worth the trip
Very good evening
The venue wasn't great. The acoustics and amplification were poor. The speakers were very small and did not emit loud enough sound. The stage was barely raised so it was not easy to get a glimpse of the performers. The venue was cold! Most people kept their coats and hats on. Very limited toilet provision for such large numbers. The queue for the bar was long and it took ages to get served. That set up needs to be improved. I enjoyed seeing them at the Bristol Beacon, much better.
Great guests , great show
Content good-sound quality poor
The venue was a bit cold and the acoustics were poor . In general we enjoyed the Concert. No doubting Ian Andersons musical ability but his voice has gone and to some degree he's ruining his legacy . However it was great to see him again
Totally great
An excellent evening. Would definitely book again
Ian and all his guests were unbelievable
Great thanks
Great venue, wonderful atmosphere.
Lovely building and great atmosphere
I love Ian Anderson but unfortunately I could hardly see him because I am short and I was near the back and there were heads in front of me and because there was no stepped seating
Beautiful building for this event, well organised and seating spaced out well to give plenty of room. Lighting and sound excellent, choir were superb as were the band and guests playing, although I think the set could of been 2 or 3 Jethro Tull songs extra 🤔.
A fantastic and moving evening, getting all into the Christmas spirit. Thank you Ian and the band
Their is the 4th year that my son and I have seen a Jethro Tull Christmas concert at one of England’s great cathedrals. An excellent show put together by Ian Anderson, & the talented musicians & special guests. A great opportunity to do two wonderful things at once, support a great cause being the upkeep of one of Britain’s oldest cathedrals (& fantastic venue for this concert) + see one of Britain’s legends of progressive rock in action - still going very strong in his 77th year.
A huge success
Following J.T. for Manu years.
Fab location, fab gig, wonderful music!
Thanks again!!
Know the Jethro Tull music. Aim - enjoy it live. The choir/special guests were awesome and setting, musically/vocally/narrative/visual variety in a well thought out set/message. Good for all. Good to be part of cathedral restoration indirectly. Something for everyone with a lovely/respectful audience. At the heart of it, a man’s take on the Christmas meaning/story/message and his exceptional musical skill set made the day. Outstanding or Llongyfarchiaduau as we say in Wales.
Lovely venue, perfect to enhance the Christmas feeling. A great evening out
Just amazing - thank u :-)
Love these Cathedral concerts!
Really fabulous concert, well organised. View was restricted, but I was aware of that when I booked the ticket - the sound was awesome
Excellent concert in a beautiful venue.
Wonderful festival experience. Cathedral staff mafe visitors very welcome
Have seen Ian Anderson many times. As usual he didn't disappoint. A good mix of Christmas classics and Tull originals. Special guests a bonus
An unusual venue and the sound was not great in the first half but it was much better in the second. We enjoyed it.
Lovely evening
Please ensure you have your Yuup e-ticket ready to show on entry
This is a seated event. The seats are 485 mm wide, 553 mm deep and the seat is 456 mm from the floor. Some seats with arms are available.
There is level access to the event. Temporary toilets will be available outside of the Cathedral for this event.
We recommend using public transport - use buses to the City Centre/Park Street. The nearest car park is College Street.
