Rhyannan Hall, a distinguished artisan in Arashi Shibori, is set to lead an exclusive all-day workshop at London Craft Week.
Attendees will delve into the world of Arashi Shibori - meaning ‘storm’ in Japanese, this unique ‘tie-dye’ method produces hypnotic patterns reminiscent of storm-driven rain. An astonishing range of designs can be created from a humble length of PVC pipe and some string.
Participants will explore the fundamentals of creating their own unique arashi shibori pieces dyed with indigo, including the option to dye a silk scarf. An exclusive seminar will provide insights into the global landscape of Arashi Shibori and Rhyannan's research in Japan.
You will experiment with arashi on a number of different fabrics, including cotton, bamboo silk and hessian as each has its own particular character to bring to the arashi practise. There is the option to work with a silk scarf for your final project, please choose this option when booking your ticket and the additional cost will be included.
Hall's expertise has been recognized globally, with exhibitions at prestigious venues: the Toyama Museum of Art and Design, the Japanese Embassy, and the World Shibori Network. She has received research grants from the Daiwa Foundation and Great British Saskawa Foundation and two scholarships from Yoshiko Wada of the World Shibori Network. With 7 years of teaching experience, Rhyannan passionately imparts her knowledge of Arashi Shibori.
She has continued to refine her own skills under the mentorship of masters, Kaei Hayakawa who is the last traditional arashi practioner in Japan, and previously from the American contemporary master artist Anna-Lisa Hedstrom.
